Chinese Herbal medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is part of the larger healing systems In TCM. Patterns of dis-ease and dysfunction are differentiated and then diagnosed based on “The 8 Principles”: Yin & Yang, Hot-Cold, Excess & Deficiency, Internal & External. This allows allows practitioners to develop concise and accurate treatments for even the most complex cases. A combination of herbs are carefully selected to address a patient’s unique pattern of symptoms, creating a custom formula and should be treated as a prescription.

Chinese herbal medicine has thousands of years of data to back it up. The Materia Medica describes 400 of the most important plants, minerals and animal substances used as treatments. Herbal therapy can be consumed internally in the form of a tea, tincture, powdered, capsules or pressed pills. It can also be used externally in the form of a poultice, patch, and raw material for steams.

Herbs can help everyone, but are especially useful for chronic conditions and hard-to-diagnose problems including:

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Infertility

  • Menopause

  • IBS and other digestive issues

  • Respiratory diseases & common cold

  • Immune system regulation

  • Menstrual or endometriosis pain & PCOS

  • Cancer treatment side effects

  • High blood pressure

  • Depression & other mood disorders

Bodywork

The power of touch! Bodywork is a hands-on approach to healing involving manipulation therapy and manual pressure. Almost every system of medicine in history has utilized massage as a medical practice. Here, we use massage styles that are based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), such as Tui Na.

Chinese cupping therapy, also known as fire cupping, involves putting special cups on the skin for a few minutes to generate suction. This helps loosen tight muscles, encourages blood flow to the area, and sedates the nervous system. It’s a great addition when addressing muscoskeletal pain and orthopedic injuries.

Like cupping, Gua Sha is another tool used in TCM to circulate stagnant Qi and blood. Gua Sha is a scraping technique in which a polished tool, usually made out of jade, quartz or a ceramic spoon, is used to stroke the skin and increase circulation. This may promote detoxification, relax tight muscles, and even treat the common cold.

MoxIbustion

Moxibustion is a TCM technique that involves the burning of the dried mugwort herb. Like other modalities in TCM, moxibustion is used to warm the meridians which promote the free flow of Qi and moves stagnant blood. There are two types of moxibustion: indirect and direct. More popular, indirect moxibustion involves lighting one end of a moxa stick and holding it over specific points or a generalized treatment area until the area is warm, and turns slightly red. Patient’s will feel a pleasant warming sensation that penetrates deeply into the skin and tissue. Moxibustion is especially beneficial for warming & promoting blood flow to the uterus, improving menstrual health & fertility. Moxibustion is also one of the oldest techniques used to turn breech babies into a head-down position prior to childbirth, and is recognized in Western Medicine.
